What is Pro-vision Reef?

Pro-vision Reef Inc is an Australian aquarium supply industry association representing licensed operators in the Queensland Marine Aquarium Fish Fishery; the Queensland Coral Fishery; and the Coral Sea Fishery.

Established in 1992, membership accounts for around 90% of active participants in those fisheries; and around 90% of the catch. Our primary activity is to engender community and market confidence in the marine aquarium industry on the Great Barrier Reef and in the Coral Sea.

To achieve this, Pro-vision Reef members act to allay concerns of our community regarding activity beneath the waves and the ecosystem effects of collecting fish, corals and invertebrates from the sea.

We also work hard to encourage hobbyists and public aquaria to purchase marine specimens on the basis of the provenance model under which the specimens are sourced from the wild.

Pro-vision Reef members are signatories to a landmark Stewardship Action Plan, which requires them to comply with collection strategies considered to be world's best practice; and to undertake in situ assessment and reporting of reefs affected by coral bleaching, considered to be a key indicator of events linked to climate change. It is understood that no such initiative applies to any fishery anywhere in the world.

Pro-vision Reef maintains collaborative and constructive relationships with the fisheries and protected areas management agencies on the Great Barrier Reef and in the Coral Sea; and is involved with marine research institutions facilitating access to locations and habitats that are seldom visited.
