Culture of Collaboration

Pro-vision Reef members acknowledge the benefits of strong collaborative relationships with the government agencies that manage our fisheries and marine protected areas.

Our fisheries are subject to robust systems of fishery management by Fisheries Queensland; and the continuous improvement model under the Strategic Assessments by Dept. Environment, Water, Heritage & the Arts. And the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has won numerous awards for the comprehensive management of this World Heritage Area.

In itself, this fact differentiates the specimens sourced from our fisheries from those that are sourced in many other parts of the world where destructive fishing practices have been reported.

The Pro-vision Reef Stewardship Action Plan and the Environmental Management System that is currently under development additionally forms important formal links to initiatives developed by those agencies.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has developed a Coral Bleaching Response Plan that uses information from sea surface temperature monitoring as a predictive tool for bleaching events. If the risk is assessed as high by this early warning system, the Coral Bleaching Response Plan will be triggered.

At this point, Signatories to the Stewardship Action Plan will conduct Reef Health & Impact Summary surveys to provide a baseline of reef health at their key collection sites that fall in the predicted high risk area. By participating in Reef Health & Impact Summary surveys at these sites, Signatories provide the Coral Stress Response Plan Taskforce with case-by-case decision making information that will guide management action, if any, for that site. Queensland Fisheries convene the taskforce, which includes a representative from Pro-vision Reef.

Queensland Fisheries is exploring models for co-management recognising the importance of operators on and in the water as effective management resources. The Stewardship Action Plan facilitates a formalised collaboration that greatly assists the achievement of those co-management aspirations.
